Chris Houlding – Houlding his own

A challenging and exciting programme of classical and contemporary music for solo trombone, with items covering four centuries.

This CD is a must for any serious lover of first rate classical brass playing with superb performances by virtuoso trombonist Chris Houlding and pianist Ian Buckle

Virtuoso trombonist Chris Houlding, Principal Trombone with Opera North and Senior Brass Tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music performs a highly imaginative ‘cutting edge’ programme, mainly of music from the 20th Century. Most items are accompanied by piano, but there are a number of very enjoyable solo works. Earlier compositions include arrangements of music by Pergolesi, Thomas, Albeniz and Honegger. Chris Houlding demonstrates an amazing combination of technical skills with superb style and musicianship. Trombone ‘must haves’ include Hindemith’s Sonata for Trombone, given an outstanding performance here as is Šulek’s Sonata (Vox Gabrieli) and Bernstein’s Elegy for Mippy II.
