A Greenwich Bandstand

SRC124-Sleeve

A concert programme inspired by the sea and by travel

Under the baton of their Director of Music, Lt-Col Malcolm Torrent, the Royal Artillery Band perform a highly entertaining concert programme containing some works inspired by the sea or by travel, this being as Greenwich is the home of the Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum. Among the selection of marches also on this CD, the Royal Artillery Band perform a march Prodana Nevesta, based on melodies from Smetana’s opera The Bartered Bride, in a version by former Director of Music Ladislao Cavalière Zavertal, himself a pupil of Dvorak. Amongst other attractive items we also hear contemporary composer Philip Sparke’s excellent Orient Express and Ardross Castle from his Hymn of the Highlands, Gordon Langford’s Fantasy on British Sea Songs and John Ansell’s Nautical Overture The Windjammer

Recorded in the Edwardian elegance of Woolwich Town Hall.
