Kneller Hall 150th Aniversary Recording

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

SRC were specially invited by Lt-Col Stephen Smith (Principal Director of Music, the Corps of Army Music) to make this recording with selected players from the bands of the Grenadier Guards, the Royal Corps of Signals and The Rifles (formerly The Light Division) together with the Kneller Hall Trumpeters.

This is a typical ‘bandstand’ programme which was eventually performed live at Kneller Hall (The Royal Military School of Music) and recorded previously in Rosslyn Hill Chapel, Hampstead featuring music associated with Army Music and K.H. in particular.

There are fine performances of a number of marches associated with Kneller Hall, of Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, of Fanfares and Celebrations (a specially commissioned work by Nigel Clarke) and Echoes by Laurie Johnson, well-known for example for his wonderfully imaginative music for the TV series The Avengers.

A Rifles Bandstand

A Rifles Bandstand

Recorded in historic Romsey Abbey, this is the first CD recorded by the renamed Band and Bugles of The Rifles (formerly The Light Division).

Such an historic amalgamation of regiments deserves a fine band and anyone listening to this most enjoyable and varied ‘bandstand’ selection will agree that the performances are absolutely first rate, under the baton of Major Calum Gray.

A ‘must purchase’ item!
